BODINE ANTHOLOGY CD-BOX REVIEW

Glowing gem or missed opportunity?

Bodine Anthology

Many Bodine-fans will have noticed the release of the CD-box Anthology by Pseudonym records in November 2019, including the three original Bodine albums and an extra disc with demos and studio-outtakes. Several months have passed to digest this release. For those of you who have time to read in the middle of the corona pandemic, here’s a review.
Prefer to jump to conclusions? Go ahead!

The wrapping

What can the fans expect? The box contains 4 discs, including the 3 original albums and a bonus disc. The albums are shelled in cardboard sleeves, in the same layout as the original LPs. Each album contains the original track list, all extras are included on the bonus disc. The box also contains a 40-page booklet including a biography with some previously unpublished anecdotes and photographs. It is printed on glossy black paper with white fonts and makes a stylish impression.

Leafing through the pages, though, one has to notice that there is a little coherence between the images and the text. Most photos could have been embedded in the text with references to why they are picked and in which context they were made. I attribute this to lack of communication between the editor and the publisher.

The music

According to the sleeve notes, the recordings of all three albums have been remastered. To compare the outcome, I have played back several tracks with the Wavepad audio editor app on my Mac over a Sony WH-H900N headset connected via bluetooth, switching back and forth between original and remastered tracks. Also, I’ve listened to the remasters on my home stereo system (set up around a 1969 Sony STR-6040 receiver).

Bodine (disc 1)

The debut album in the box sounds just as good as I was used to. My hearing is too limited to perceive any difference between the original and the remastered recording. If I’d have to guess, I’d say that the bass guitar has become a bit more prominent, but it’s rather subtle and I could be completely off the mark. It’s a good thing that this disc only contains the original track list, it saves trouble of having to turn off your CD-player before it starts playing the tedious 1981 studio outtakes and radio jingles. They have only one-time fun value, though I wouldn’t have minded having Rock Doctor and Regular Rocker with Jay van Feggelen to be included on this disc (even if they are from another recording session). Luckily, these tracks can be found on the fourth disc (keep reading!).

Hard Times in Helden

1982-08-11 Sucks_Helden_concert_review-tn2019-05-03: Helden, in Limburg province is by far the town where Bodine performed most: Once in the Mk-I line-up, three times as Mk-II and once more as Mk-III. Hence, it is interesting that now a concert review of one of these gigs has surfaced, from Sucks Magazine no less, thanks to the unequaled Martin! This is from the gig that took place on 11 August 1982. It reveals the following set list:

  • Rock Machine
  • Pumping Iron
  • Freight Train
  • Heavy Rain
  • Hard Times
  • Regular Rocker
  • Aragorn
  • Heavy Metal Heart
    --- encore ---
  • On The Lookout
  • Wild Fire Queen

Most remarkable about this list is that Hard Times was played more than a year before it was released on Three Times Running in 1983.

For now, the article is only shared in Dutch, an English translation will be published later.

Regular Rocker unincorporated--again!

ban facebook_by_nameisraj-d34di1x22 March 2018: For those of you looking for any sort of connection on this site with Facebook--don't. As of today, all plugins and APIs are termiminated. Bye bye, superficiality! Bye bye, less than 200 likes! Regular Rocker has become unincorporated again--like it was at the start. And yes, the recent privacy breach unveiled by The Guardian (more than a year ago!) and Facebook's slow reaction to it played part in this decision. But mainly, the Facebook plugins were underutilised in every single respect. They did not create more traffic, as hoped for, they did not generate more activity on the site - only on Facebook, which is the wrong place in my view, because there is no control over it. In all, Facebook has very little added value in keeping the memory of Bodine on the world wide web alive.

Musical Revelations-I

2011 Bodine_IV_demo_front-L5 December 2017: Hello to all of you, and welcome to the Bodine Tribute Site - as far as I know, still the only one on the web. By Regular Rocker standards, I've been out of touch for a while, and I'll try to make it up to you.

In 2017 we have been celebrating Jay van Feggelen's re-appearance on stage and for those of you who haven't seen him yet: make sure you get a ticket to the show of United Voices of Rock in Leeuwarden on 16 December!

For years I have been in the possession (if that's an appropriate word for it) of Bodine music that is not very easily accessible: five tracks from the demo that Bodine Mk-IV recorded in 1992. What better occasion is there to share these songs with Jay back behind the microphone?

I've been hesitating to share this stuff since I don't have a clue about the legal copyrights to this. The point is: I think nobody knows exactly. According to mail exchange I had with someone knowledgeable, these songs have been broadcast on Baars Classic Rock since a couple of years, but you have to be lucky to catch them. To be on the safe side still, I have 'locked' the recordings behind a free registration wall. For those of you who have an account here, login and surf to to this page to find all the tracks. If you don't have an account yet, register now!

What are you reading still? GO!!!
